Goodnight Boone

Here it is, the book we've all been waiting for!  Goodnight Boone, written by Melanie W. Greene, Michelle W. Bolick and Blair B. Proffit, and illustrated by....yours truly!

Grandfather Mountain slumbers peacefully in the background of each colorful page featuring images from various local sites in different seasons, accompanied by beautifully crafted lyrics by the local authors.

It's in production NOW!  I wish I could say that we have a website for ordering, but we dont, yet.  We ARE planning a book signing event at Boone Drug, Deerfield on Monday, December 17th, so come visit us there! (originals, prints and cards will also be available).

Otherwise, you will be able to pick up your books at Boone Drug, Cheap Joes, and Watauga County Arts Council....great for gift giving!

Cheers,
Susan

Happy Family

This tryptich painting was made to celebrate the marriage of our son to his lovely wife, Huiyi, who is from Taiwan.

The right panel represents his world, and the left panel represents her world;  the center panel is their shared world.  Huiyi painted the calligraphy in the center of the umbrella, which, roughly translated means "Happy Family" (with blessings).

So here's wishing many blessings to the happy family!

Winter

And, finally, the winter series.

Stay tuned as these are "fine tuned"!

Cheers!
Susan

Fall

4 pages for Fall....just the beginning layers.....

Summer

4 pages of summer!

You  might be wondering, what IS this book?
Well, I have to check with the authors before I release the title.....

but here's a hint:  see Grandfather Mountain sleeping in the background of all the pages?

Yep.  It's about the beautiful place where I live.

Cheers!
Susan

Next step: Spring

Next, I designed a mountain scene.  This scene will be on every page, but of course it will be a different rendition.

Starting with SPRING: 4 pages of spring!
Now, this is just the back drop.
The text will be at the bottom semicirlce, and images representing text will be painted into the scene.

the beginning

OK!  A new project!
Illustrating a book!
It's something I've always wanted to do!

So, to begin:
  • I took 140 lb watercolor paper, and gesso'ed it on both sides.
  • Then measured 8" x 8.5"
  • Creased, folded and tore pages so that all edges are deckled
Ready to start!
Cheers,
Susan

Wedding Carousel

this painting is for my lovely, wonderful, patient (!) sister who is engaged to a wonderful, loving man! Their obvious love for each other, their joi de vivre .....and upcoming marriage inspired this painting!

The painting was just juried into a show for the Watauga County Arts Council, so that means, I guess, that it's done!

Cheers, my darlings, and many many fond wishes for your wonderful happiness!

Demo!

Yesterday, I spent most of the day being filmed at Cheap Joes' (Art Stuff) headquarters!

I demo'd quite a few projects and products....it took awhile to get used to talking while painting, and to talking to the camera as though it was a person.

In the end, it was a pretty fun experience; I'll include the video clips after they're released (and sorry, Holly: this is NOT your wedding painting I'm working on here!)

Cheers,

Susan
